Why working out at home works best for me

By: Petra King, Mom of 2, Owner Petra King Photography

My fitness journey started about 6 years ago when I decided to put me first. I have always been an active person. But what started with a simple goal to run 5k’s one year quickly blossomed into my love of fitness.  Has it been an easy road? No! But despite the hardships, injuries, sore muscles, tiredness and life hardships I work hard at keeping myself moving forward.  Running outdoors in Ontario is pretty much seasonal so when the snow arrived I joined GoodLife.  I slowly started learning all I could on my own time about weights and fitness while running my business and being a mom of 2.  Here  we are 6 years later and while I no longer belong to a gym I do workout at home currently everyday. I’m using a Beachbody Program called  80 Day Obsession and am currently on my second round. I am mentally and physically stronger than this time last year.  I’m stronger than yesterday and pushing myself  towards my goals and hoping to be an inspiration for my kids and family.

Why working-out at home works for me

Right now, I workout in my basement at the crack of dawn. I enjoy the beach body programs because it gets me sweating and lifting with  whole lot of cardio (and cursing-ha!) but I feel so amazing afterwards. The hardest part about working-out on your own is keeping yourself motivated but for me working out at home on my own time is amazing. I only have myself to worry about, to compete with and I find I am more focused.

Why do I choose to workout from home?

I love being able to create my own environment so that I can maximize the most out of my time. Maybe that is the Boss in me I don’t know, but I do know that life is extremely BUSY but you can make time. You don’t need a lot to workout at home.  I have a modest small space in my basement that has everything I need- a few dumbbells, a stability ball, resistance bands, a mat and a foam roller.  The rest I use my body weight for.

My advice?

Commit to doing something for yourself everyday! I’m a firm believer that we thrive better with a strong support team behind you to cheer you on and help you through the struggles and hurdles.  Whether it’s our family, friends or a group of people on the same journey as you, we are here to support each other even is we  all are at different stages of our journey’s.

I am proud of how far I have come and that I am doing it for me and nobody else. I have goals that I made for myself and it keeps my momentum going. One of the biggest things that inspires me, is that post workout high. Those endorphins allow me to be the best I can be for myself and everyone around me. That to me is happiness.  When I am not active I feel blah. It effects everything I do, so  I set my alarm, I get up and just do it. Even if I don’t want to.

Keep going. Keep bettering you for you.  Live and enjoy your life. Make the most out of it, we only have one!
