Ah February…the month we celebrate all things LOVE! Oh and heart health too, says the nutritionist in me but that’s not my main focus for this article. Instead I’d like to focus on the LOVE, most specifically, SELF-love!
Here’s the thing, and I bet this might be true for you too, we spend much of our time focusing and projecting our love onto others. Hands up if you focus your giving of love mainly towards others? Oh yeah – I’m 100% GUILTY as charged…or used to be anyway. In fact it has led me on a wild journey of my own over the past few years, especially since becoming a mama.
It seems women in general have a really hard time putting themselves first. It’s easy for us to love others but when it comes to directing that love towards ourselves, why is it so damn hard most of the time? I’m gonna go out on a limb and say – low self worth – we just don’t view ourselves as worthy of our own love. This was the case for me and in fact, is the case for the majority of the women I have spoken to about this over the years.
Loving ourselves is no small feat and requires us to be fully committed to ourselves. It requires awareness and daily action. But the rewards and benefits of this commitment to ourselves serves us with more courage and bravery, with more confidence and self-awareness, with more peace and calm and with more love to give others because our cup is now full.
So how can we incorporate more self love into our lives, so that we can easily pour from an overflowing cup (hell yah)? Here are a few things I have put into place that have made the world of difference.
1. Make the commitment.
I literally had to block time in my day as my own. Typically for me that means waking up at 5am before the rest of my sweet fam wakes up, but that doesn’t have to mean this for you. What about even 10 minutes before the rest of the family gets up, so you can start the day slow and maybe with a warm bevie to feel like you’re giving yourself a big hug. Or maybe you find time during your day to slow down and give yourself that time. Taking some deep breathes just for you is a beautiful ritual you can work into your day. I would say focus your thoughts on yourself and make them loving. A quick ‘I AM’ statement as you breathe is a nice way to remind your body and mind that you are worth it. As you breathe in and out, repeat this statement under your breath (or out loud if it feels good) – ‘I am worthy of this time and love myself for knowing this’.
Here’s a delicious hot latte to warm your insides up, complete with heart healthy benefits of being anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants and healthy fats.
1.5 – 2 c boiling hot water
1 inch fresh turmeric root
1 inch fresh ginger root
1 tbsp coconut butter (or ghee)
1 tsp honey to taste (optional)
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until frothy,
ENJOY warm and with 5-10 slow deep breathes…and feel the gift of love you have just given yourself
2. Nourish your body.
How we choose to feed ourselves is a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves. So if you find yourself binging on junk food day in and day out, I would suggest getting quiet with yourself and asking – why am I choosing these foods/how do these foods really make me feel? And listen in to see what comes up for you. Choosing high vibe foods such as fruits, vegetables, meats (if you’re not vegetarian), healthy fats and the such will leave the body feeling amazing after you eat. Think about it, eating is a form of self love or self sabotage. Choose lovingly.
My fave smoothie of the moment is nourishing and filled with super foods to nourish your body from the inside out.
1 c non-dairy milk (cashew milk is my fave)
1 c water
1/2 c frozen cauliflower
1/2 c frozen blueberries
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 scoop of your fave vegan vanilla protein powder
Blend up and enjoy!!!
3. Move your body.
Kitchen dance parties are my favorite way to move my body! I choose a song that feels good to me and dance it out. Maybe for you it’s hitting the gym, going for a run, playing a sport, hiking in the forest, getting onto your yoga mat or even just taking to stroll after dinner. Whatever movement you choose, say thank you to yourself afterwards for giving yourself that time just for you.
4. Keep a gratitude journal.
Maybe you take 5 minutes in the morning or before bed to give thanks for all the awesomeness in your life ~ be sure you include your sweet self in all that you are grateful for.
5. Make a date with yourself, like a real date.
Book it into your calendar for real. Take yourself out for lunch or wander the bookstore for an hour. Or maybe you’re more of a spa girl and massages or pedicures are what you desire. Whatever it is, do it for yourself and love every minute of it.
